Medical Physics in Germany

Medical physics is a genuinely technical niche — radiotherapy physics, medical imaging technology, and radiation safety — that sits closer to engineering and physics than to biology, and it's consistently in demand wherever oncology and diagnostic imaging departments actually operate. Coursework typically covers radiation physics and dosimetry, imaging-system technology (CT, MRI, ultrasound), and radiation-protection regulation, usually alongside a substantial practical or clinical placement component inside a hospital medical-physics department. Clinical placement hours inside an active hospital medical-physics department are typically a formal, assessed part of the degree rather than an optional add-on, since practical competence with real equipment is treated as inseparable from the theoretical coursework. Radiation-protection regulation is usually examined as its own dedicated module, reflecting how central compliance with radiation-safety law is to the profession in practice.

Typical German Universities

Heidelberg University (with strong ties to the German Cancer Research Center, DKFZ), the University of Wurzburg, and the Technical University of Kaiserslautern all run established medical physics programs, several offering direct clinical-placement partnerships with major oncology and radiology departments. Heidelberg's proximity to DKFZ specifically gives that program's students access to one of Europe's largest cancer-research infrastructures for their clinical placement and thesis work.

Entry Requirements

A strong physics or engineering background is typically required alongside, or sometimes instead of, a medical one — this is the one field on this list where quantitative technical training matters more at the door than prior clinical exposure. A Bachelor's in physics, engineering, or a closely related quantitative discipline is generally treated as the standard entry qualification rather than a life-sciences degree alone. Graduates who complete the required additional professional certification are eligible for clinically responsible medical-physicist roles specifically, a formally regulated position in German hospitals that carries meaningfully more responsibility and compensation than a general physics-adjacent research role.
